The Race Is Starting to Get Interesting

Week 2 of Palm Beach County middle school basketball is in the books, and the division races are starting to take shape.

Six boys teams remain undefeated, several programs are right on the heels of their division leaders, and the girls’ competition is producing some interesting results of its own.

Independence, Palm Springs, West Boynton and Don Estridge have all improved to 5–0. Roosevelt and Western Pines are also unbeaten, with both teams sitting at 4–0 according to the latest district standings.

But there are some teams sitting just one game behind their division leaders, and with the season moving quickly, every game is becoming more important.

Here’s what happened during Week 2 and where things stand heading into the next round of games.

West Boynton and Emerald Cove Continue Winning

The South-Central Division is shaping up to be one of the more competitive divisions in Palm Beach County.

West Boynton continues to lead the way at 5–0 after picking up victories over Village Academy and Woodlands during the second week of competition.

Coach Dennis Mobley’s team has managed to stay unbeaten through its first five games and currently holds the top spot in the division.

Emerald Cove has also been putting together wins.

Coach Ti Hayden’s squad defeated Tradewinds and Village Academy during Week 2, improving to 4–1.

Tradewinds remains in the picture at 3–2, while Christa McAuliffe sits at 2–3.

With West Boynton and Emerald Cove both playing well, the South-Central Division should be one to keep an eye on as the season moves forward.

Palm Springs Remains Perfect in the East

Palm Springs continues to take care of business.

The Stingrays improved to 5–0 after recording victories over Lake Worth and Okeeheelee during Week 2.

The undefeated start has Palm Springs sitting alone at the top of the East Division.

Lake Worth remains within striking distance at 3–1, while Congress and L.C. Swain are both 2–2.

Palm Springs has been consistent through five games, but the Stingrays will need to keep that same focus as teams begin fighting for playoff positioning.

Independence and Duncan Lead the North

Independence has continued its strong start, improving to 5–0 with victories over Howell Watkins and BAK during Week 2.

Duncan also picked up wins over BAK and Conniston, improving to 4–1.

That leaves Independence with a one-game advantage over Duncan in the North Division.

Conniston, Jupiter and Howell Watkins are all sitting at 2–3.

Independence has the early lead, but Duncan remains close enough to make things interesting.

Roosevelt Holds the Top Spot in the North-Central Division

Roosevelt remains undefeated at 4–0 after picking up victories over Bear Lakes and Somerset Canyons.

Jeaga improved to 3–1 with wins over Conservatory School and Bear Lakes.

John F. Kennedy and Somerset Canyons are both sitting at 2–1.

Roosevelt currently leads the division, but Jeaga and the other teams near the top still have opportunities to make a move.

Western Pines Leads a Tight West Division

The West Division is beginning to look like a three-team race.

Western Pines remains unbeaten at 4–0 after defeating Polo Park and Wellington Landings during Week 2.

Wellington Landings sits at 3–1 after recording a victory over Crestwood, while Polo Park is also 3–1 following its win over Lake Shore.

Only one game separates Western Pines from its two closest challengers in the loss column.

This division could come down to which team handles the tougher matchups over the next few weeks.

Don Estridge Stays Unbeaten in the South

Don Estridge has continued its winning ways, improving to 5–0 after victories over Carver and Boca Raton.

Omni remains right behind at 4–1 after defeating Eagles Landing and Logger’s Run.

Eagles Landing and Logger’s Run are both 2–2.

Don Estridge currently controls the South Division, but Omni has done enough to keep the pressure on.

With both programs near the top, this could become an interesting race for the division title.

Girls Basketball: Week 2 Brings Some Important Results

The girls’ competition is also beginning to heat up, with several programs picking up key victories during the second week.

Although complete girls’ standings were not included in the available district records, the reported results from October 2 through October 9 give us a look at which teams are finding success.

West Boynton Continues to Make Noise

West Boynton picked up victories over Emerald Cove and Tradewinds during Week 2.

The win over Emerald Cove was an important result in the South-Central Division, and West Boynton followed it up by defeating Tradewinds.

Emerald Cove also recorded a victory over Christa McAuliffe, while Tradewinds defeated Woodlands.

These results should make the South-Central Division interesting as the season progresses.

Independence Picks Up Two More Wins

Independence continued its winning ways with victories over Duncan and Conniston.

Duncan also recorded a victory over Jupiter, while Howell Watkins defeated Conniston and BAK.

The North Division has already produced some competitive results, and Independence appears to be building momentum.

Roosevelt and Wellington Landings Keep Winning

Roosevelt picked up victories over Jeaga and Somerset Canyons.

Wellington Landings defeated Osceola Creek, while Western Pines recorded a victory over Lake Shore.

With several teams competing for position, the North-Central and West divisions should continue to provide some interesting matchups.

Don Estridge and Omni Pick Up Key Victories

Don Estridge defeated Logger’s Run, while Omni recorded a victory over Carver.

Eagles Landing picked up a win over Boca Raton, and Polo Park defeated Crestwood.

The South and West divisions are beginning to take shape, but there’s still plenty of basketball left to be played.

Note: The available district update do not include winners for every girls’ game played October 8–9. Only confirmed results are included in this recap.

The Cage’s Take: The Pressure Is Starting to Build

Two weeks into the season, six boys programs have managed to stay unbeaten. That’s impressive, but what makes things interesting is how close some of these division races have become.

West Boynton and Emerald Cove are both playing good basketball in the South-Central Division.

Western Pines has Wellington Landings and Polo Park right behind it in the West.

Independence has Duncan chasing in the North, while Don Estridge has Omni looking to close the gap in the South.

And Palm Springs continues to handle its business in the East.

The undefeated teams have earned their spots at the top, but the next few games will tell us a lot more about how these divisions might finish.

On the girls’ side, we’re also seeing programs beginning to build momentum. West Boynton, Independence and Roosevelt have recorded some important victories, and several other teams are starting to make their presence felt.

The competition is getting better, the division races are tightening up, and there’s plenty left to settle.

Rangeman Films and The Cage will continue covering the action throughout Palm Beach County, bringing attention to the teams and young athletes putting in the work.
